Common questions regarding your membership, model profile, and starting out with us: |
I have forgotten my log in details
If you have forgotten your password then please use the link here to retrieve your log in details by entering your email address. It's worth making a note of your username somewhere safe such as in a diary, or use a common username which you use for everything. The Academy steam cannot view your passwords on the system for your own safety and security, so please use the 'forgot your password' option to retrieve them.
How do I create my model profile?
If you have joined on the Silver or Gold membership packages then you will also get a profile up in the models section, the Academy team will create this for you and will email you asking for images when you join. We are currently implementing a new system where you will be able to upload and edit the model profile yourself. When you join and log in you will be able to upload one image on your profile, this image will show up on your public profile when you post in the Academy forum. You will be emailed what info you will need to send to complete your model profile.
How do I change the images and information on my model profile?
Soon you will be able to change the model profile yourself, and update it with your latest portfolio images and edit your information and experience. Our programmers are currently working in implementing this new system, in the meantime if you want a full profile change with new portfolio images and your latest information added then this costs £5 for our web designers to change, to cover their time in changing them. As if every member wanted their profile changed it would take our web design team weeks to do them all - which would not leave them with time for anything else! Please contact us to arrange to pay for a profile change. To change the image that comes up when you post on the forums please log in, and click profile in the top right hand corner to upload a new one.
How do I renew my membership?
You will be notified when your membership runs out and given the option to renew it, your membership will not be renewed automatically. When renewing your membership you will be offered a special half price renewal rate to say thank you for joining us for another year! We will issue you with a Paypal request to renew your membership which will also include a full change on your model profile and a copy of our latest Model Handbook.
How will the Academy help me get started out?
The Academy has quickly become one of the biggest model training facilities in the UK, with over 1500 new and existing models registered with us, and around 100 girls visiting us each month for portfolio shoots and Model Tutorial Days. The Academy helps models in many different ways - the members website provides all the help and advice you will ever need to make it as a professional model, with hundreds of advice articles and tips to help you get started out. As a member you also get a Models Handbook to take to shoots, and a profile to showcase your portfolio and get booked for work. The Academy also has forums to talk to other members, lots of jobs to apply for, and some fantastic modelling contests. All of this combined gives you everything you need to start out as a model, and if you're looking for some training and portfolio shoots then we have some unbeatable packages available.
Do I need professional images to get started out?
We accept girls onto the Academy without professional images, however you do need professional images to get a profile up, and you are more likely to get work when submitting your images to a client as well because most models will have them. You do not have to have your portfolio done with us as we will accept any professional images of a high quality - however make sure you do your research. We have some of the best packages out there, so have a look at what we offer and if you want to shoot elsewhere make sure they can offer you just as much without ripping you off. You can view our packages here.
I have no experience, how do I get started out as a model?
Your first step would be to join the Academy, or attend a Model Tutorial Day. Both will give you the training and advice you need to get started out in the industry, but the Model Tutorial Days have the portfolio shoots included as well. No matter where you live in the UK the Academy will help you, and there are even ''getting started'' sections inside with step by step guides on what to do next. Spend some time reading through all the advice articles inside and you'll quickly become as clued up as the professional models!
I am an experienced model, what can you offer me?
The Academy is not just for new models, in fact several well known Page 3 models have even left their current agencies to join the Academy as Kerri treats all her girls so well! Inside the advice and training will help you further your career, and help you reach levels which Kerri has done in hers. With lots of jobs and contests to apply for as well - our Model of the Year contest has over £15,000 worth of prizes and last years winner was seen by millions on the BBC! Many models report that they achieve more within a month of joining us than they did in a year of modelling on their own.
How do I become a Grid Girl?
There are several ways to become a Grid Girl - you can apply to the racing series directly and ask to be put on file for future work, or you can buy tickets to a racing event near you and go down to hand out cards to the teams. The easiest way of becoming a Grid Girl is by joining the Academy - as we have lots of Grid Girl jobs all round the UK at racing events! We supply Foxhill Motocross and British Superbike Championships with Grid Girls to hand out awards at the racing events and hold umbrellas over the drivers - and the girls we send often appear on TV and in magazines from the event as well! Thundersport GB racing series attend every Norwich Model Tutorial Day event looking for Grid Girls each month, so if you want a one on one casting with them make sure you come along to an event!
How do I know if I have what it takes to become a model?
By looking at this website and taking the first step into fulfilling your dreams you already have what it takes to become a model. Of course you must be attractive, and if people have told you that you are pretty and you don't mind being in front of a camera then you have potential. The modelling industry now is full of 'real girls'. Nuts, Zoo and FHM constantly have real girl contests and magazines feature them on a monthly basis. It is not the case where the prettiest people are the ones who succeed, we have seen the most stunning girls get no work because they have bad attitudes or are lazy, whereas the lesser attractive model with the great personality, sense of humour and determination will go much further. So it does not matter if you are not as pretty as Kate Moss as long as you work hard and are determined to get what you want. Anyone can look a million dollars with the right make up artist, stylist, photographer and airbrushing! As long as people in the industry enjoy working with you for who you are that is what is important.
How can I improve my confidence?
The majority of girls who come to us are not confident, but it can be learned. At school Kerri would never speak in front of the class, now she presents on stage in front of hundreds of people! If you have a Model Tutorial Day event near you then come along, as every girl who attends them say they increase their confidence, and Kerri holds classes in building confidence there as well. If you cannot get to an event then have a look at the articles inside the Academy, as Kerri has written some on how to not only appear to be more confident, but how to believe in yourself and be more confident in all aspects of your life - not just for modelling!
How do I build my portfolio?
You need to get a varied portfolio, listed inside the Academy are all the images you will need to get, including a variety of headshots, location and studio shots depending on what you want to do. You'll also find out how to display your images, and common mistakes models make such as including more than 2 images from the set which is a big no-no. The best way to build a varied portfolio is to come along to a Model Tutorial Day, as these are only £50 and include lots of different set ups, and with ten outfit changes at least you get all the variety you need for your book. You will also find advice in the Academy on how to display your portfolio in a book, and common mistakes new models make such as using photo albums instead of proper portfolio folders which agencies hate to see.
What happens at a Model Tutorial Day?
The Model Tutorial Days are held in a very relaxed environment, but are jam packed with shoots and training throughout the day! Girls get their hair and make up done on arrival and throughout the day, and Kerri chooses their outfits to shoot in. Girls receive at least ten outfit changes and different shoots with a variety of Academy photographers, whilst getting advice on how to stand and pose. Kerri also goes round helping the girls and runs a variety of training classes as well which you are given the option to attend. At the end of the day the girls all take part in a mini catwalk contest (everyone has improved confidence by the end of the day but you do not have to take part if you do not want to) with the winner going to the Model of the year 2010 grand final with over £15,000 worth of prizes! Each girl who attends the day receives every image from the event on CD to keep, which is always at least 300 images and often over 500 from one days shooting! These are yours to keep.
How can I find a good agency?
Sadly a lot of agencies set up these days to con girls out of money but never find them work. Inside the Academy you will find lists of reputable fashion, glamour, promotional, and television agencies to apply to. You'll also find lists of ones to avoid and advice on how to spot an agencies scams - which can take many forms. Kerri has done various features with the BBC on how to prevent being scammed by agencies, and has also given talks on BBC Norfolk Radio to advise girls of how to avoid them. Inside the Academy we have done all the hard work for you - and even list the contact information for each agency to save you the trouble of finding out how to apply to them all! If you want to do promotional modelling you'll find tonnes of fantastic agencies to apply to inside who Kerri has worked with in the past!
Common questions regarding the modelling industry: |
Do I need to be a certain size or height to become a model?
These days models come in all shapes and sizes, without the restrictions there used to be. On the high fashion catwalks in Milan models will still have to be 5 foot 9 and taller, and sizes 0 - 6 but in the rest of the modelling industry things are not so strict luckily. For example the fashion shows the Academy does with House of Fraser use models who are 5 foot tall, and models who are almost 6 foot tall, some are size 6 and some are size 14. The Academy has no height or size restrictions and we believe in giving everyone a chance, and that personality and determination are much more important. For other companies its generally accepted that for fashion you must be 5 foot 8 or above, and a size 6-8, but for glamour you can be any height, and can get away with being a bit more curvy. For promotional modelling, grid girl work and television you can be any height and size. To be a fitness model you need to be around 5 foot 7 or above but have a very toned physique of an athlete. Kerri is only 5 foot 6 (and a half!) but has featured in Vogue and countless other fashion shoots and features because of the name she made for herself in the glamour industry. So it goes to show that whatever height and size you are it does not stop you from doing what you want to do.
How can I avoid portfolio scams?
There are many portfolio scams affecting models, from attending free shoots and being talked into spending up to and over £1000 on the images, to agencies saying you must get a portfolio done through them. We have a whole section on portfolio scams which you can read here. Make sure you always do your research, get recommendations from people, always read the terms and conditions and never go to anyone who do not display upfront prices and charges on their website. Also be wary of people pressure selling to you there and then, always take time to go away and think before you make a decision.
How much should I pay for a portfolio?
Portfolios range in price from hundreds to even thousands depending on where you go. Sadly the more you pay does not guarantee you a better portfolio, as often girls end up with poor quality images they have paid hundreds on. We believe that our portfolio package prices are the best deals around, offering models much more than they can get anywhere else, you can view our packages here. We do not believe you should have to pay any more for a portfolio than this, although sadly the majority of companies charge a lot more than this. Our Model Tutorial Days are even better offering portfolio shoots at the events with hundreds of images to keep on CD included in the price of just £50! That is why hundreds of girls from all over the UK keep coming back to see us month after month.
How can I avoid agency scams?
Inside the Academy you'll find loads of articles on how to avoid agency scams, as sadly they affect hundreds of new models from all over the UK. Scams can take the form of joining fee's, comp cards, web presence to making you have a new portfolio done by them. So make sure you have a good read of all the articles inside the Academy so you can avoid falling victim of the scams. As charging you to have comp cards printed or a new portfolio is their way of avoiding charging you a joining fee but still trying to con you out of money. Agencies charging high joining fee's have no intention of finding you work, their aim is to just find more new models to charge the joining fee's too.
Do I have to pay to join a good agency?
A good modelling agency will not charge you to be on it's books and will take you on for no charge at all, using existing portfolio images you have. They may then send you to a photographer they use for new images on a syndication basis so they can then sell the images to newspapers and magazines, and use your new images on their website. However television and film agencies do all charge joining fee's of around £70 a year, which is taken from your first pay packet, these agencies get you lots of work and are well worth joining, so don't be alarmed if a television agency charges you a joining fee.
How can I become a promotional model?
Anyone can become a promotional model, as long as you are over 16. It has no height or size requirements and is great fun to do, it pays well (around £80-£100 per day) and involves lots of freebies which is great if you are doing make up or beauty promotions! Inside the Academy you'll find a full list of promotional agencies from all over the UK to apply to, and we have lots of well paid promotional jobs to apply for as well. Some models make a good living from promotional work and its a great way of earning extra money at weekends or complimenting a career in modelling.
How can I get published in magazines?
The easiest way to get published is to buy every magazine you see, and send pictures in to all of them! Too much effort? Simply check out the Academy advice section where it lists every magazine and how to appear in it. We've done the hard work so you don't have to (without sounding too much like a Mr Muscle advert!) you can also find lots of jobs in the forums to apply for, including magazines such as Nuts and Max Power! The magazines feature countless Academy girls every week and often we even send images in for you so you know they are reaching the right people!
What does TFP and TFCD mean?
TFP means 'time for print' and TFCD means 'time for CD'. They are essentially the same thing these days and both mean that you give your time to the photographer for free in exchange for them giving you their time for free. So neither of you pays, and neither of you gets paid.
Do you recommend TFP shoots?
We do not recommend TFP shoots, on the basis that anyone not charging for their time are usually amateurs who cannot produce good images for your portfolio, and you are better off paying for quality. Sometimes good photographers will offer TFP to try out new equipment or a new idea they have however bear in mind that this is just a trial shoot for them. Kerri has never done TFP throughout her career because you lose control of your images, and they can end up anywhere! If every photographer has images of you then no one will pay you for shoots - you are not exclusive anymore and doing TFP with a lot of photographers can be damaging. If you are going to shoot TFP stick to fashion, never ever do topless or nude as you have no control over where those images can go and they may come back and haunt you!
Is it true I have no rights over my images if I work with a photographer?
The photographer always retains copyright of their images and can essentially do what they please with them - sell them abroad, put them on dodgy pay per view sites and so on. This is why we say do not do TFP and likewise be careful who you shoot with even if they pay you. We recommend if you are going to do topless only do it direct with the magazines and newspapers or commissioned photographers, as lots of photographers tell girls they can get them in magazines if they strip off, when in reality they can't and the images can then be used anywhere! When you book a shoot with the Academy you have our guarantee we will not use your images for anything - you remain in control.
How much can I expect to earn as a model?
The money is no where near what it used to be, for example the Daily Sport used to pay £1500 per front cover of the newspaper, they now pay about £300, so if the photographer offers you a 50/50 split you will get about £150 per image sold. Which is still good if your images sell over and over again from the one shoot! The industry is paying less these days but there is still plenty of money to be made. The best money to be made is selling images abroad to Austrailia and America, and working for the newspapers as opposed to the magazines. You can also expect to earn around £100 per day as a promotional model. Most models have another revenue stream on the side, such as promotions, TV presenting or acting, dancing or working as a make up artist or stylist. There are no guarantee's with modelling and sometimes you can have lots of work, the next month you can have barely any, so you need something to back it up when you have a quiet period.
Do you recommend model networking websites?
We recommend using social networking sites such as Facebook to meet others in the industry and to make new friends, we do not recommend the modelling networking websites as they tend to be very nasty places to me. Portfolio's get slaughtered by jealous members and people get nasty comments and harrassment all the time. There is no support network and the photographers often tend to be amateur and just want to shoot girls naked. On the Academy you can network with other new models on our forums, and be part of a big support network where everyone praises each other and supports them when they are feeling down or getting hassled. Likewise the photographers on the Academy are professional and have references by Kerri.
How do I know if a photographer is professional?
There are a lot of fantastic professional photographers in this industry, however there are even more amateur photographers posing as professionals. A good professional photographer should have a professional looking website, with different packages available, and their own studio premises. A professional will have been published in various magazines and newspapers and will most likely be registered with top picture agencies as well. Be wary of any photographers who come to you saying if you work with them they can get you in a magazine - as most professional photographers are too busy shooting celebrities to chase new models on Facebook or social networking websites. You go to the professionals - they do not go to you.
A photographer is harrassing me what can I do?
A lot of girls report harrassment to us by certain photographers, although many do not report it for whatever reason. Recently after one girl admitted harrassment by a certain photographer over 20 models came forward to declare they also had trouble from him. Harrassment from anybody, whether its a photographer or anyone else - is against the law and you must report them to the police. If you do nothing they will not only continue to hassle you but lots of other girls as well if they get away with it once. The Academy fully supports girls who are having trouble and will help assist you with statements to the police. Inside the Academy you will find a whole advice section on how to deal with harrassment, and stalkers as well.
Will there always be a make up artist on a shoot?
Whilst most professional studio portfolio packages, and magazine shoots will include a make up artist often you will not have access to one with your photoshoots. Therefore you need to become very good at doing your own hair and make up. Inside the Academy you'll find advice on the best products to use, and how to apply them, as well as different looks to create. You'll also find lots of information on styling your hair, and how to get ready for a shoot when you are pushed for time!
I've been offered a free makeover and photoshoot in London but they have not spoken about fee's, is this a scam?
This is a common scam girls report to us, who say they have 'won' a free makeover and photoshoot in London, only to end up spending around £1000 on the images! These scams have been featured on Watchdog, as everyone wins these competitions and they use pressure selling techniques to get girls to pay around £100 per image! This is an unreasonable amount to pay for images, and there are certain known agencies who say to become a model you must go to these places for your free shoot as well - as they are on a big commission from the money you then spend on the portfolio!
How do I get into television and acting?
There are several good agencies in London who supply girls for television and film roles, from extras to walk on and acting parts in shows like Eastenders, to big Hollywood movies!Kerri has had small roles in lots of big movies, they pay well and it's always great fun meeting Hollywoods biggest stars! Usually filming in London or Pinewood and Shepperton Studio's but often on location in other areas around the UK as well. Inside the Academy you'll find a full list of agencies to apply to, and when they open their books as they only do this once a year to apply for!
How can I check if a photographer works for the magazine he says he can get me into?
Many photographers say they work for a magazine to either get you to pay for a photoshoot, or to get you to strip off for them! This is false advertising and can lead to legal action from the magazines - who are usually unaware of it! If a photographer says he works for a magazine then it usually means he doesn't - because the magazines send girls who apply direct to them, or agency girls, or a lot of the time only buy their images from syndication companies anyway! Any photographer can send an image of a girl into a magazine as a 'real girl' snapshot, this does not mean they work for the magazine in question. If you are unsure either ask Kerri or ring the magazine and ask them directly!
How can I become a beauty queen?
There are countless beauty pageants in the industry to enter, many charging hundreds of pounds to enter. With new contests springing up all the time to make the organisers money it's hard knowing which contests to enter. You often enter to find you have won a place in the national final before they have even met you - and you just have to pay several hundred pounds to enter! The only pageants worth applying to are Miss Great Britain (who we run several heats for and work closely with) and Miss England. These are the two biggest 'Miss' titles to hold in the UK. Inside the Academy you'll find a full list of pageants and how to avoid the common scams hitting the pageant industry, which Kerri has spoken openly about on the BBC in the past - seen by millions of people!
What modelling contests do you suggest I enter?
Throughout Kerri's 7 years in the industry she entered (and won many of) the majority of decent competitions out there - if not all of them! Inside the Academy you'll find a full list of every contest we recommend, and those that are not worth entering. Most magazines hold modelling contests on a weekly basis but there are only a few which will really bring you publicity - such as FHM High Street Honeys, Max Power Babe, and Page 3 Idol.
I got scouted by an agency in London are they legit?
Every time Kerri goes to London she always gets scouted outside Topshop on Oxford Street - this is how hundreds of girls get scammed! A scout (on a lot of commission!) will stop you, flatter you, take an image and your details and say if the agency like you they will be in touch. The agency then gets in contact with every single girl asking for high joining fee's or a portfolio which must be done through them. Every time Kerri takes a card from them (which they are reluctant to give) and receives a call as soon as she says she is a professional model or has a portfolio they simply hang up they don't even bother continuing to talk to you knowing you cannot be scammed! These agencies go by different names every week and scam hundreds of girls out of money - it is very flattering being stopped in the streets but anyone doing this will likely be scamming you. These days so many girls approach the agencies they do not need to hire scouts in the street, so those that do are only out to con girls out of money. So if someone stops you in the street feel free to say no thanks, and if they ask why tell them you heard they were scamming girls! It does not hurt to ask questions either, as the people scouting no nothing of the industry so are easily caught off guard and do not know what to say.
Do I need my own website?
As a new model starting out you do not need your own website until you have a reasonably big name in the modelling industry. You do need a web presence though, somewhere with all your portfolio images and details on to be booked for work. Your Academy profile is perfect for this as you can link people to view it and with the hundreds of thousands of hits we get you know you are being seen by the right modelling and television companies. With your own personal website people are not going to come across you whilst generally browsing for models as they will do on the Academy models section, however if you can afford one and have lots of portfolio images it's nice to have your own website, and you can also include members areas for fans which will earn you some extra money as well.
If I get rejected from an agency should I give up?
Never give up if an agency tells you that you are not suitable for them, some may be direct and say your too short, or too fat, as some are quite brutal! Agencies change their booking team often, and they are always looking for something different. So even if you are rejected it does not hurt to apply again 6 months later as it may be someone else in charge of choosing the models by then. You do not need an agency to succeed, Kerri has proven this mainly representing herself for 7 years. If an agency do not like you just think it's their loss, and apply somewhere else or keep sending images to the magazines directly and entering their contests. Don't forget there are plenty of jobs to apply for on the Academy in the meantime - we often get more work than most model agencies!
Are there age limits and laws regarding modelling?
Yes, and they are very strict as well. As a guideline you must be 16 to do promotional modelling or Grid Girl work (under 18's need permission to do Grid Girl work through) and you need to be 18 to shoot glamour (implied topless, topless, etc) Under 16's can shoot bikini and lingerie but it must not be sexually suggestive this is against the law. You'll find full guidelines and the laws inside the Academy, as well as lots of information on what you can do as a teen model, what is illegal to do, and what you can do when you turn 18.
Should I go topless?
Going topless is not a decision to be taken lightly and a lot of factors need to be taken into consideration. If you do want to be a glamour model we recommend sticking to lingerie and implied topless for awhile and then deciding to go topless when it suits you. Only ever go topless with a magazine or newspaper, not any old photographer as your images can be placed anywhere without your consent and you have no control over where they end up! You need to consider your age, your job and how it may affect your work, your family and boyfriends reactions, and much more. You'll find a full list of things to consider inside the Academy's advice section to help you with your decision. - If you then decide to go topless - you'll also find articles to help you with poses to try which will flatter your shape when going topless.
Will modelling affect my current job?
Depending on your current job modelling may affect it, as some companies may frown upon it. If you work in the professional sector i.e legal, nursing, teaching and so on they are more likely to frown upon it than if you worked in an office, shop or beauty salon. Always do fashion and catwalk first if you are unsure of how your employer may react and if you want to move on to lingerie or glamour then you need to seriously consider if it will affect your work, as the last thing you want to do is get the sack. Your employers would not mind if you went to them and asked their opinions, and if they are against modelling then you need to decide whether you value your current job enough to risk becoming a model.
What is picture syndication?
This is where you shoot for free, in the agreement that if your images then sell - you and the photographer receive a cut of the sales. A good split is 50/50 although some photographers and picture companies try offering the model a much smaller split. You should only do syndication with photographers who have active contracts and sales with companies such as Celebrity Pictures, Big Pictures, Splash News, Matrix, Showbiz London and so on. Contracts with picture agencies are hard to get and not many photographers have them unless they are professional and regularly get sales in magazines and newspapers (for the record - The Academy has these contracts in place and have sold pictures all over the world of Kerri and the girls through Celebrity Pictures, Matrix and Splash News) Many photographers now say shoot with them doing syndication knowing full well they won't get published, but it means the model will pose topless or even nude for them without requiring payment! So be very wary and check with the picture agencies or send us a message if you are unsure. Any photographer can send a real girl snap into Nuts or Zoo, it does not mean they syndicate.
Are trips abroad safe?
Several professional companies offer trips abroad, and so do several amateur photographers, and we have heard several horror stories where girls have felt hassled and perved on by the photographers and not felt safe. So whilst some trips are very safe, some are quite the opposite. Any girl going abroad to a country she has probably not visited before, needs to be very careful and only travel to shoot with a company they trust. The Academy ensures all it's photographers on the trips abroad are CRB checked for the girls safety, and Kerri also attends every trip as well so you know that a female is going to be in charge during the trip! Kerri meets the girls at the arrival gates and drops them off again on every trip, so travelling alone isn't too daunting, and organises every aspect of the trip herself as well. The Academy's trips offer the best packages, and best value for money as well as being completely safe, you can view all our trips abroad here.
